The Alabama State University Center for Student Multimedia invites applications from Alabama high school students for the Tanksley-Crum Multimedia High School Journalism Workshop, which will be held at the Alabama State University on June 14-21, 2016.
Application Deadline: Postmarked by May 9. Only complete applications will be considered.
Details: Students will learn how to report the news using a variety of multimedia tools, including print, photos, videos, broadcast, radio, and social media. Students will get a chance to meet and interview journalists who covered . They’ll produce TV and radio newscasts, a newspaper and a Web site.
Who is eligible: Alabama high school students currently enrolled in 10th, 11th, or 12th grades. Participants should have an interest in journalism, but prior experience with journalism is not required.
Fees: The workshop—including room and board—is free, thanks to support from the Dow Jones News Fund and other funders. Students will need only to provide their own transportation to and from the campus.

How to apply: Include the following in your application:
2. Write a 2- to 3-page essay (double-spaced) that describes why you want to participate in the workshop. This essay should address your interest in journalism and the important role journalism plays in covering events such as large-scale disasters.
3. Include a letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well – preferably a teacher – that describes your potential to succeed at this workshop and your potential as a journalist.
4. A sample of your work. This could be a newspaper article you wrote for the student paper, a photo essay or video you produced, or an essay you wrote for class. For multimedia, please supply a link to the video (on YouTube, for example) or provide it on a CD or DVD. Samples will not be returned. Work samples DO NOT need to be published.
